CNN Doesn't Like The CR48, Huh. Let's Break him to the ground, right here.

So Mr. Mangalindan, I loved your new post on CNN, NOT.

Quote #1:
"it totes a single-core Atom processor and 2 GB of RAM, typical parts for netbooks that sold two or three years ago. (Now, if you pick up a netbook at all, it probably has a more capable, dual-core Atom.)"
-I'll have you know, my Dell Mini 10V, and MSI Wind, from the same time period as what you are describing, both had a single core Atom processor, and 1 GB of RAM, unlike the newer, HD Video capable, Pine Trail in the CR48's with included double RAM.

Quote #2:
"The cursor jumps around, pages sometimes load slowly"
-That's because you're to retarded to realize Google is trying to get rid of the click, by using two finger tap, scroll and single click tap.

Quote #3:
"more than two or three open tabs can slow work to a crawl."
-Sorry, the CR48 doesn't support the browsing of more then one porn site.

Quote #4:
"As for video playback? Hit or (mostly) miss. Netflix isn't supported yet, while YouTube and Hulu are only watchable at their lowest settings, though even then, they'll occasionally stutter. "
-Seriously? Netflix? It's a PILOT program, what the hell did you expect. As for youtube and Hulu, I think the 30,000 some odd CR48 users disagree.

Well, at least he likes the stickers. How unappreciative....

  1. Other than your response to question 1, your points were highly illogical.

A better response to question 2:
The cursor jumps around because Google is implementing their own, more intuitive way of navigating using new clicking techniques (two-finger scrolling, three-finger clicking for various functionality). The pages might load slowly for more reasons than a free notebook--always check your router.

A better response to question 3:
This doesn't exactly seem to mesh with any of the experiences I've had. I visit media-rich sites frequently and have very little problem switching from task to task.

A better response to question 4:
It's not the Chrome OS doesn't support Netflix, but rather Netflix doesn't support any Linux-based OS, but I suppose that's a chicken or the egg dilemma. As for YouTube and Hulu, again, check your internet connection before attributing your choppy video playback to a piece of free hardware.

A few other notes to our misguided review writer: CNN is not the appropriate place to air your frustrations with Chrome OS or the CR-48 (which, by the way, is in BETA testing, which you agreed to when you signed up); don't blame all of your problems on one machine when there are actually quite a few components in a typical internet set up that could be causing your problems (the symptoms you described SCREAM bad connection); lastly, the CR-48 is reasonably equipped (your claims of out-of-date specs are ill-received since they are largely untrue) and these reasonable equipments are designed to let Google know what their OS can do with hardware that costs less.

Well, those are all the things I would have said.

  2. I read that review...yesterday, actually! Pretty stupid....of course the hardware isn't above the line, Google said it isn't supposed to be. The trackpad is customizable in the settings, and I prefer the default setting anyways. Pages sometimes start a little freeze-ish, but soon load a pretty great speeds (even for my slow network connection). And I'll have that guy know that there are times when I'm watching two YouTube videos at a time and have at LEAST 4 other tabs open! The videos don't slow down at all. The only thing I haven't liked about the CR-48 so far is some faults in the software, which is, after all, not the CR-48's fault, such as the exclusion of Java (obviously the whole Open Source thing..). The rest of Chrome OS is great, and as the web grows, so will it. As for the hardware, the Cr-48 has one of the nicest keyboards I've ever typed on. I get a nice feeling from resting my hands on the rubber plastic as I type. The trackpad is HUGE, and has an extremely nice feeling to it. The convenient camera's is good for pictures...not so much for videos, but the speaker and mic qualities are great considering they tiny size. I had placed all the stickers on the back, but removed it and left the little Chrome logo sticker instead. It gives it a cheap man's Macbook look.

  3. As for the actual software, of course I dislike the exclusion of certain traditional web environments..but at least they kept flash. It's also too bad H.246 support is gone. But it feels just like the Chrome browser. I haven't tried the 3D feature just yet. I haven't installed any extensions, but I'm thinking about it. I like "keeping the browser clean". There's a web app for just about anything, and I love some that work offline, like the NY times or Poppit. The nicest part: my stuff is saved online, so if I need to recover the OS, I can do it with no worries...that is, if Google doesn't pull what they did with Gmail on me :S but that's really rare, and I don't think it'll happen to me.

  4. @Pedosa: That is exactly what I don't want on my site. I want a site "WITHOUT the Gibberish". You wrote the boring crap that every other site would post.

@GoingBonkz: I was going to do the macbook look, but the big sticker is a definitive Chrome look.
    What happened with Gmail?

  5. About Gmail, Google accidentally deleted the all the emails from some users.

As for the article, while some things are true, he should keep in mind that the Cr48 is a beta testing environment. All beta products had issues, that's why it's called beta.

  6. Was the reason inactivity? Or was it a slip?

    EXACTLY
